It is a remote control flying Tinker Bell. David has a remote control helicopter. The kids gave it to him last Christmas (I think? Maybe the Christmas before). Amy had grand dreams of battles between Tinker Bell and the helicopter. We had seen it in a K-Mart flier. I don't why we get a K-Mart flier - there is only one I know of around here and it's quite a way from us. So, I thought I was "Parent of the Year" when I found Tinker Bell at Big Lots and then again at TJ Maxx. I was thrilled when I was able to go back to TJ Maxx without children tagging along and get it for her.
All that joy was dashed to the ground when David nicked one of the wings while trying to free Tinker Bell from the packaging ... There was a collective <SIGH> heard round the world my friends! Totally brought that song, Toy Packaging, by Sara Groves to mind.
I told Amy not to worry. I had bought the one and only at TJ Maxx but I had seen at least two others at Big Lots and several on the shelf at Target. They were $20 at both TJ Maxx and Big Lots and only $5 or $6 more at Target. So the day after Christmas we headed out to find a replacement. I couldn't find any at the first Target we went to and there were none at Big Lots either. BUT Big Lots had tons of these:
They are made by the same company, it's just not Tinker Bell. The price was the same but then it rang up at $10 instead of $20 so I was thinking "SCORE!"
Again, my joy was short lived. We took her home, CAREFULLY removed her from the packaging, charged her up and began to have fun with her. It was great fun ....
UNTIL .....
There is no way to "land" the fairy. She kind of just crashes to the floor. The wings are not all that heavy duty. Remember - this is what snapped when David was extricating Tinker Bell ....
After maybe 5 hours ..... this fairy had a broken wing as well.
another big <SIGH>
$30 down the drain and STILL no flying fairy!!!!
Later ....
While cleaning Audrey's room ...
We found Amy's missing birthday money. Amy's birthday is in OCTOBER. It is now DECEMBER. Amy kept swearing up and down that I had put her money in a drawer in the kitchen and I kept swearing up and down that she took it and it was in envelope somewhere. Turns out I was right - although why it was buried under the accumulated piles of art, schoolwork, notes, kid menu coloring pages, etc on Audrey's desk ... I will never know and honestly, I'm not sure I want to ...
ANYWAY
While looking for the remote control Tinker Bell at Target we found the remote control car aisle. A remote control car was the other thing Amy had asked for. For some reason I hadn't found them until the day she was with me looking for Tinker Bell. None of the ones we saw had prices on them that day so we passed them over, thinking we'd find the Tinker Bell. Amy's birthday money was supposed to go towards the purchase of a scooter. Now that it is DECEMBER and there is perpetually rain-snow-ice in the forecast and the temps hover between 20 and 30, a scooter is no longer at the top of her wish list nor is it exactly practical. So I suggested we take her new found money and go back and check on the prices of the remote control cars we had seen. She found a cool lookin' jeep and it was $9.99. PERFECT! She wouldn't have to use all of her birthday money ($25) and she'd have plenty of time to save up the difference by the summer when she could actually ride the scooter anyway. So we brought home this:
And the Polly Pockets love their new mode of transportation! WHEW! Christmas Gift Crisis averted!
